 Job Summary

 

Under the direction of the Area Crew Leader, the employee operates light to medium equipment to assist with building and improving county roads. Cuts brush, trees and grass on the right-of-ways. Maintains assigned pieces of equipment and performs other duties as assigned in support of area activities. All equipment operators may be assigned manual labor as required by project. Employees receive instructions, and work will be reviewed in progress and inspected upon completion as needed.

A.Equipment Operation

  1. Operates bush cutter to maintain the right-of-ways

  2. Operates bat wing to maintain right-of-ways; trim limbs and removes small trees.

  3. Operates front end loader to materials such as aggregate.

  4. Operates grid roller to break up and pack aggregate during the road construction process.

  5. Operates steel wheel roller to smooth aggregate during paving.

 

B.Miscellaneous Duties

 

  1. Patches pot holes and repairs shoulders using cold mix.

  2. Uses shovel to clean out drainage pipes.

  3. Flags traffic at road construction sites.

  4. Assists to lay drainage pipes and tiles.

  5. Perform manual labor to assist with bridge construction.

  6. Operates power saws to cut downed trees blocking roadways.

  7. Follows motor grader to clean out pipes.

  8. May have assigned routes to clean drains.

  9. Perform safety checks on assigned equipment; add fluids or make adjustments as required.

  1. Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors and co-workers.

  2. Reading skills to understand operator manuals, directives, procedures and instruction.

  3. Skills in basic math to read equipment gauges.

  4. Knowledge of practices applied in the driving of trucks and use of light equipment for various maintenance and construction operations..

  5. Knowledge of traffic regulations.

  6. Defensive driving skills.

  7. Ability to maintain and service assigned equipment.

  8. *Knowledge of county and department rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

 

Other Characteristics

  (Minimum Qualifications)

 

  1. Any combination of education and experience which provides qualification to perform duties listed above will be considered.

  2. Possession of a valid Alabama Driver’s License; may be required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License.

  3.  Ability to work overtime and weekend in emergencies.

  4. Ability to work under various extreme weather conditions.

  5. Possess some experience in operating light equipment and driving trucks.

 

Work Environment

 

The work involves moderate to high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at great heights in extreme outdoor weather conditions.

Job Summary

 

Under the direction of the R/B Foreman, the employee operates heavy equipment to maintain paved and dirt roads, build dirt roads, maintain and clear right-of-ways, clear out and maintain ditches along paved roads and install driveway drainage pipes. The employee may be directed to assist others with construction activities and maintain equipment as assigned. All equipment operators may be assigned manual labor as required by project. Employees receive instructions, and work will be reviewed in progress and inspected upon completion as needed.

A.Motor Grader Operation

  1. Operates motor grader to maintain and blade dirt roads, clip shoulders and pull ditches.

  2. Widens and improves dirt roads for paving operations; marks ditch lines, pulls ditches and shapes roads.

  3. Puts down and packs aggregate and hot and cold mix.

  4. Clips shoulders along paved roads.

  5. Levels and prepares roads and clips shoulders for resurfacing operations.

  6. Prepares ditches to lay pipe.

 

B.Other Equipment

 

  1. Operates bush cutter and bat wing cutter to maintain right-of-ways.

  2. Operates grid roller to pack on dirt roads and bust aggregate.

  3. Drives lowboy to transport heavy equipment and pipes.

  4. Operates vibrating packer to pack roads prior to paving operations.

  5. Operates steel wheel roller and rubber tire roller to pack gravel.

  6. Operates rubber tire front end loader to load aggregate and paving gravel, clear brush and roadways.

  7. Drives tandem dump truck and single axel dump truck to haul dirt and other required materials.

  8. Operates bull dozer to clear and perform subgrade work on road construction projects and push aggregate.

  9. Operates water truck to water down road prior to packing and paving.

  10. Operates chip spreader to spread chips on spills during ice.

  11. Operates backhoe to clear out ditches, lay pipe, load dirt, gravel and aggregate and break up beaver dams.

  12. Operates grade all and track hoe type excavators to install pipe and culverts.

  13. Operates pan scraper on road construction projects.

 

C.Miscellaneous

 

  1. Performs equipment safety checks prior to operation, check fluid levels, lights, tires, ect. Notifies shop of maintenance as needed.

  2. Operates chain saw during emergency situations.

  3. May flag during construction.

  4. Assist shop personnel to service equipment and change tires.

  5. Perform minor repairs to equipment; change belts, hydraulic hoses and blades.

  6. Patches potholes with cold mix.

  7. Assist with bridge construction, operates equipment to tear out old structure and lays out new lumber.

  8. Forms and pours concrete, installs reinforcement bars
